In Anemones and Poppies, John Black turns to one of the most painful and enduring conflicts of our time — the confrontation between Israel and Palestine. Through the national flowers of both nations — the red anemone and the poppy — the artist transforms political tension into a poetic dialogue.
The two blossoms share a divided surface, their forms both intertwining and resisting separation. A transparent plastic layer engraved with the word “Peace” in Hebrew and Arabic introduces a fragile boundary — a literal and metaphorical veil that both divides and connects.
Black’s work moves beyond geopolitics: it is a meditation on shared humanity, on the possibility of harmony amid division, and on how beauty can survive even in the shadow of conflict.
In this work from the Peace series, John Black reflects on the fragile balance between nations through the symbolic language of their national flowers. The plum blossom — emblem of China — and the peony — symbol of Taiwan — are placed in visual dialogue, sharing a single pictorial space yet divided by a subtle boundary.
Rendered in expressive oil and acrylic, the composition is overlaid with a transparent plastic sheet engraved with the word “Peace” in the respective languages of both countries. This material intervention introduces both separation and connection, transparency and distance — a metaphor for the complex, delicate tension between cultural unity and political division.
Black’s use of flowers as vehicles of meaning transcends mere representation; they become emblems of hope and reconciliation, suggesting that beauty and peace can coexist even within fracture.
